European Capital of Culture – Portugal will be announced on 7 December

The Portuguese city that will be the European Capital of Culture 2027 will be announced tomorrow, Thursday 7 December at 4 pm in a press conference at Belém Cultural Centre (CCB), in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva, the Representative of the European Commission in Portugal, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, and the President of the Jury, Beatriz Garcia.

This announcement represents the pinnacle of a process initiated in 2019, which led to 12 cities applying their candidacy. Following the pre-selection concluded in March this year, the initial stage led to a shortlist of 4 candidacies, one of which will be the winning city: Aveiro, Braga, Évora or Ponta Delgada.

Technical visits were held to each of the cities under selection in the last week and on the 5th and 6th there were final hearings in Lisbon with the delegations of the four nominees. At the conference, after the announcement made by the President of the Jury, the representative of the elected city will take the stage.

This decision falls under a panel of juries of 11 experts appointed by the European Institutions and the Portuguese Ministry of culture: Else Christensen-Redzepovic and Jorge Cerveira Pinto (European Parliament), Marilyn Gaughan Reddan, Goda Giedraityte and Rossella Tarantino (European Council), Jelle Burggraaff, Beatriz Garcia and Hrvoje Laurenta (European Commission), Anne Karjalainen (Committee of the Regions), João Seixas and Suzana Faro (Portuguese Ministry of Culture).

NB: The press conference will be streamed on the Cultura Portugal YouTube channel.
