Jorge Alves Costa was born in Meda on 20 February 1959.
He graduated in Law from the University of Coimbra School of Law in 1983.
A judge with the Public Prosecution Office, currently in the rank of Deputy Prosecutor General. He has been placed in many courts, including Gouveia, Santiago do Cacém, and Lisbon (Labour Court).
He was a member of the Public Prosecution Office Supreme Council, elected by his peers.
From 1996 to 1999 he was Assistant to the Secretary of State for Justice and (1999) Chief of Cabinet for the Minister of Justice.
From 2001 to 2004, he was Secretary of the Public Prosecution Office.
He was posted as Advisor to the Public Prosecution Office in the Supreme Administrative Court and then the Cabinet of the Public Prosecution Office at the Constitutional Court.
He followed and served under the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of Europe in 2000 and 2007.
He was Secretary General and member of the Board of Directors of SMMP.
He collaborated with the Judiciary Studies Centre in the fields of labour law and international and European law.
From 2009 to 2014, he served at the Lisbon Labour Court.
He was Deputy Inspector General with the Inspectorate General for Justice Services.
From 2015 to 2017 he was Chief of Cabinet for the Minister of Home Affairs.
De 2017 a 2021, exerceu funções no Juízo do Trabalho de Lisboa.
From 1 March 2021 to date, he is Director General of the Directorate General for Justice Policy.
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with academic and legal institutions, both national and international, as speaker/moderator on matters of European Union and international law, especially on international judiciary cooperation on criminal law. He has also published papers on this subject.
