The Minister of Economy Pedro Reis claimed that Lufthansa took on "a very strong commitment" with Portugal by deciding to set up a factory to repair aircraft engine parts and components, that will have 700 qualified workers in Santa Maria da Feira.
Pedro Reis, who made the statement in Amsterdam, where he is travelling with the President of the Republic on a visit to the Netherlands, said that Lufthansa Technik "will invest [more than 100 million euros in this unit] in the long run".
"This is a very strong commitment to the country, and it is welcome at a time when the whole world is on the hunt for such projects", he said, adding that the investment is the outcome "of thorough work from the Portuguese Foreign Trade and Investment Agency and the Minister of Economy with Lufthansa".
Pedro Reis claimed that "this Lufthansa hub may bring more aviation and more world aeronautics clients, as they have 800 such clients" to Portugal.
This is an investment "of strategic importance" that will have "a significant impact" on Portugal and "carries a sign for the international markets, Portuguese industry, and Europe, at an important moment of trying to attract the investment all countries desire".
Lufthansa Technik "employs over 20 thousand workers, is located in dozens of countries and chose to have its production, maintenance, revision, and retrofitting hub, whether for engines or aviation parts in Portugal".
This hub will employ "over 700 people and will start its training area in 2025, with highly qualified staff, that is, from electromechanics, engineering, IT, management, in a highly sophisticated and technological hub", he stressed.
In a statement, the Lufthansa group repair enterprise announced it intends to start building the factory in Santa Maria da Feira, Aveiro district, in 2026.
The enterprise notes that the Portuguese Government, represented by AICEP, was "extremely cooperative" to carry out this investment, a "sign of the Lufthansa Group’s commitment in Portugal".
