This year, Portugal will attend the meetings of the group of the 20 largest economies, invited by Brazil
Portugal attends during this year more than 100 G20 meetings (invited by Brazil, who is chairing the group) on a ministerial and technical level, ending with the Heads of State and Government Summit in Rio de Janeiro on 18 and 19 November 2024.
The G20 is one of the leading international fora for economic cooperation and international development. It was set up in 1999 and since 2008 it holds an annual summit with the respective Heads of State and Government.
The G20 states – USA, China, Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, France, Japan, Italy, India, Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Australia, South Korea, Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey, and the European Union and the African Union – account for the largest economies and make up around 85% of global GDP, more than 75% of global trade, and around 2/3 of the world’s population.
Brazil took on for the first time the chair of the G20 on 1 December 2023 under the motto "Building a Fair World and a Sustainable Planet" and the following priorities: social inclusion and fighting poverty; energy transitions, and fostering sustainable development in its economic, social, and environmental dimensions; and reforming global governance institutions.
