Statement by the European Commission – Maria Luís Albuquerque

The Prime Minister praises the quality and coherence of the College of Commissioner’s composition that the President Ursula von der Leyen has just presented.

We note the crucial area given to Commissioner Maria Luís Albuquerque, appointed by Portugal. This will be a vital sector for our economy’s competitiveness, to complete the Capital Markets Union, developing private investment, and boosting the European innovation’s capabilities.

These subjects were considered fundamental in the Union strategy approved by the European Council and were particularly highlighted by the recent Letta and Draghi reports, especially the latter.

This area is crucial for Europe and Portugal given the diversification of the funding sources with the aim of fostering economic growth and investment. This is essential to progress, the sustainability of Europe’s social and economic project, and the Union’s capacity to meet the expectations, needs and interests felt by the European and Portuguese citizens.
