Portugal and Angola sign agreement on training healthcare professionals

Portugal and Angola signed a cooperation agreement to train 630 Angolan healthcare professionals with the aim of improving universal healthcare in this Portuguese-speaking country. The agreement was signed by the Ministers of Health Ana Paula Martins and Sílvia Paula Valentim Lutucuta, under the "Training Human Resources for Angola’s Universal Healthcare Coverage Project".

The Portuguese Minister of Health Ana Paula Martins claimed that "there is much we can learn together, especially on organising and providing healthcare services and management models. The exchange of experiences will be fundamental to reinforce our practices. I wish to thank the Minister of Angola for her presence and the historical ties uniting our peoples, with all the conditions in place to become even more united".

The Angolan Minister of Health Sílvia Paula Valentim Lutucuta expressed her satisfaction with this partnership moving forward. "We are very excited to begin this specialist training process, with short, medium, and long-term programmes. Training staff in Portugal i sone of our collaboration’s key points. We believe that this cooperation, which is already quite intense in several fields of healthcare, will become even stronger, institutionalised, and consolidated this allowing for our professionals’ capabilities and skills to expand".

The project covers training for 200 doctors, 200 nurses, 200 treatment diagnosis staff, as well as 30 hospital assistants in the fields of public health and treatment care. The project, which will run until 2028, is part of the Portuguese 2030 Cooperation Strategy and will cover the 21 Angolan provinces.

The cooperation between the two countries will include training programmes in Angola, supported by Portuguese trainers, and in Portugal, where Angolan professionals will have the opportunity to improve their skills in reference healthcare facilities.
