The Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro stated today that Portugal may oppose the upcoming European Union budget for 2028-2034 unless the principles of the cohesion policy are safeguarded.
The statements were made on the side of the informal meeting of European Union Heads of State and Government in Cyprus.
“Any perspective that disrespects that principle will be firmly opposed by us and justified. We are not here claiming or begging for anything, we are here to be an active part of a process of affirmation for the bloc”, he stressed.
European budget and convergence
The Prime Minister noted that the upcoming European Union multiannual financial framework indicates a model of “more competitive funds”, with greater competition between Member States, a scenario for which Portugal says is not ready.
He advocated however that the cohesion policy must not be overlooked nor the convergence path interrupted, stressing that Portugal has not yet achieved the 90% of the EU average.
International dialogue and support for Ukraine
On an international level, the Prime Minister noted the importance of dialogue in solving conflicts, admitting positive aspects of Russia possibly attending international fora such as the G20.
He also praised the approval of a European loan to Ukraine, 90 billion euros, considering this to be “a great step” and reiterated Portugal’s commitment to abiding by European decisions, including regarding migration.
