Government approves five-million-euro plan to modernise and boost Lusa press agency

The Government approved the Lusa Press Agency Investment and Modernisation Plan to the sum of five million euros to boost the press agency’s technological, digital, and operational capabilities. The plan materializes the increase in capital by the State in 2025 and is part of a broader strategy for the stabilisation, modernisation, and valuation of the main Portuguese press agency.

Of the five million euros allocated, three will be used for technological upgrading and two to increase human resources in strategic areas.

The technological component contemplates the implementation of a new editorial system, the upgrade and migration of databases, strengthening information systems, new human resource management solutions, and investments in the national and international offices.

In human resources, the investment will allow a reinforcement of the jobs considered essential for the agency’s future, namely the international correspondents’ network, digital and technological areas, as well as teams focusing on fact-checking and countering disinformation.

In a context where the media sector is undergoing profound transformations, this plan will enable Lusa to boost its capacity to adapt to the challenges of digitalisation, technological innovation and new information consumption patterns, while at the same time preserving the editorial quality, credibility, and independence that characterise its activity.

In tandem, the Minister of the Presidency authorised the agency’s board of directors to update workers’ wages under the terms of the State corporate sector, contributing to valuing professionals and increasing the capacity to attract and retain talent.

The plan was approved at a particularly relevant moment for the agency, just before the drafting of the Activities Plan and Budget for 2026. The investment will endow Lusa with better technological instruments, boosting its national and international presence, and increasing its capacity to respond in an increasingly discerning and competitive media environment.

By investing in Lusa press agency’s modernisation, the Government is reaffirming its commitment to free, plural, and independent media, acknowledging the agency’s strategic role in producing and disseminating rigorous, credible information of public interest to the Portuguese citizens in Portugal and the world.
