The Government is moving forward with the creation of a capacity mechanism to boost electricity supply security and ensure energy is available at the times of greater demand, following the growing electrification of the economy and consumption.

The Minister of Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho stresses that “today, Portugal is one of Europe’s countries with the most electricity coming from renewable sources. To guarantee that there is energy available at all times is another side of that ambition. We are setting up this mechanism in a serious and sustained manner, safeguarding the lowest cost for households and businesses, and taking the right steps with the European Commission. We don’t just announce: we decide and we execute”.

The new mechanism will be developed through tenders and will have different solutions, including energy generation, storage, and managing demand with the aim of guaranteeing the lowest cost possible for consumers.
