Ministry of Education reinforces studying authors from the CPLP in basic and secondary schooling
The Government will reinforce the study of Portuguese language authors from the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) in Portuguese subjects in basic and secondary schooling.
The guideline was set by the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation Fernando Alexandre under the currently ongoing revision of Essential Learning, and envisages that the Institute of Education, Quality, and Evaluation considers CPLP authors in the selection of works, applying the sae technical and pedagogical criteria used for Portuguese authors.
At the moment, the Essential Learning in Portuguese subject in secondar schooling only refer to Portuguese authors as mandatory or optional reading. The final versions of the curricula should enter into force for the 2027/2028 school year.
The Portuguese approach will be presented this week in Dili at the meeting of the CPLP Ministers of Education by the Secretary of State for School Administration Maria Luísa Oliveira, who will invite the remaining countries of the community to reflect on similar solutions in their education systems.
In a letter addressed to the CPLP Ministers of Education, the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel and the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation advocate “a more inclusive approach representative of the lusophone space” and feel that “including authors from other CPLP countries is fair acknowledgement of all the Portuguese language writers.”
