Portugal will be sending an emergency civil protection team with around 50 personnel to assist with the response operations to the earthquakes that struck Venezuela, following the availability shown by the Portuguese Government, accepted by the Venezuelan authorities.

Following a phone conversation with the Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez, the Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro claimed that "Portugal is willing to help Venezuela where and however the Venezuelan Government considers useful”, indicating that the emergency team was “readily appreciated and accepted".

The team is being deployed by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Home Affairs, National Defence, and Health and will depart as soon as possible. It will include experts in rescue operations, medical emergency staff, and members of the GNR Emergency and Relief Unit with experience in international disaster response missions.

Portugal will also be part of the European Union coordinated response via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism following the Venezuelan request for assistance. The Prime Minister stressed that "Venezuela has an open channel with Portugal for bilateral support and the EU’s support".

Luís Montenegro also offered the Venezuelan President "the Portuguese people’s full solidarity with the Venezuelan people and Government given this tragedy” and offered "his heartfelt condolences for the lives lost".

The support for the Portuguese community residing in Venezuela is ensures by the Portuguese Embassy in Caracas and the consulate network. As the Prime Minister claimed, “our Embassy in Caracas and the consulate network is mobilised to support the large Portuguese community in Venezuela".

Luís Montenegro also ensured that "Venezuela counts on Portugal in reacting and recovering from this natural disaster”.
